FRIDAY NIGHT DOG BLOG – RAIN AS METAPHOR January 8, 2011

The hydrological cycle with its combination of gravity and anti-gravity (evaporation) is the key to life on Earth.

And yet gravity is at once familiar, affecting every breath we take and every step we take, and somewhat mysterious in terms of the space-time continuum. But the rain falls, and at times while we wish for it, it falls in quantities that exceed expectations and needs.

Sasha and Dexter do not seem to worry about such things. I cannot tell whether they are missing the other person who is normally around here, who has been laid up in hospital for these past almost five weeks with pneumonia acquired from an operation. She is now breathing without the assistance of machinery and hopefully soon be walking again.

Meanwhile in Central Queensland, west of Bundaberg, the swollen Burnett River flows past isolated homes, including that of her sister. They get to see the effects of the rain from their veranda. Strangely while the phone is cut, emails seem to working.

This week I have a combination of photos of Sasha and Dexter from the past, and the flood waters from a few days ago:

We tend to take gravitation for granted, which always reminds me of the Sting singing:

Friday Ark is tied up in port this week and for next few weeks, although some family pets affected by the Queensland floods were in need of rescue.

I am hoping that your wife is continuing to recover. Such a long journey for you both.

Thank you again Colleen. Susan has put on a “finestrator”, and is can talk with increasing strength – and give me orders. It is a step forward, and saves her having to write down most of what she needed to say. I am finding I have to exercise patience, and let her recover.

Who knew that hospitals were such dangerous places, and that she would get pneumonia?

Yesterday the tracheotomy was removed, but Susan still had oxygen support and feed line while she resumes breathing and eating independently.

To be breathing and then eating independently are markings of great progress. So happy to hear of this wmmbb. This has been a difficult road but it sounds like a turn has been taken for the better. I truly hope so.

Susan is getting stronger and doing more. I took the walker we hired back yesterday. And yet the x-rays on her lungs still show a shadow which I take to be the effect of the pneumonia.

Thanks for your comment and interest, Colleen.
